I don't want to fall too far behind in my picture posting, so I've finally uploaded pictures from Calvin and Kerry's wedding last month in Honolulu. And here they are............... boo yah!
I figured it was high time I joined up with one of these Web 2.0 picture-sharing sites, (They have the internet on computers now!), but it was only after much soul-searching that I decided on Picasa. Being a twenty-something living in this part of the country, I regularly meet people whose professional lives depend on decisions such as these. I don't have any hard rules on the subject, but I've generally had much more fun with employees of eBay, Ask and Yahoo than Google, so I feel like I should direct my e-business accordingly. But I'm sorry guys, Picasa just seemed easier for the ultra-low level of functionality I was looking for. But the jury's still out, so if someone feels like making the case for Flickr, I'm all ears.
We were told yesterday that there's been a change in our flight schedule coming home from the Philippines. Instead of a 1.5 hour layover in Seoul, we now have a 13.5 hour layover. Korean Air has been nice enough to put us up in a airport hotel, but how lame would it be to nap the whole time? I've got to figure that half of our stay will be lost to airport awfulness, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how to spend 6 hours in South Korea?
... that his suit on tonight's Idol finale looked really sharp. They dress everyone else on that show like a total douche - how has he, the biggest douche of them all, escaped that ax?
P.S.1. I think the word "douche" has pretty much run its course, but I couldn't think of a good synonym.
P.S.2. Why does the Urban Dictionary have an entry for "urban thesaurus", but no actual, functioning thesaurus?
P.S.3. I mean... umm... American Idol? Who watches that trash?
That's how old I am today.
Marie and I are actually doing some wedding planning! We're looking at properties up in wine country (it's a big country) for a potential nuptial home-base. We're thinking something in a "Memorial Day 2008", but if you're reading this, odds are you're an important part of the invite list, so let us know if there are any potential conflicts.
And get your RSS feeds prepped for our 100% exciting wedding blog, to be launched in a month or two. Little known fact: Marie actually operated a super-secret blog of her own for a little while, the URL of which has been locked in the vault on pain of death. But I'm going to try to get her involved and posting, so everyone will have a candid window into the planning process. Our current debate: when looking at rental properties, is a swimming pool mandatory or just strongly favored?
I popped the fourth and final pill of my oral typhoid vaccine this morning. For those who haven't had the pleasure, typhoid vaccines come in two forms, a series of pills taken over eight days, or a single shot in the arm. The pills work better, last longer and are (at leastwith my Cal insurance plan) significantly less expensive. So why would you ever bother with the injection? Well, according to the nurse in the travel clinic, during the eight days of treatment the patient isn't allowed drink alcohol. Horrific! You can imagine why your average college senior might shy away from such a medicine, and take the more expensive option.
But upon closer investigation, the nurse wasn't being entirely up-front with me. It's true that alcohol will dissolve the pill's outer lining and kill the live, antibody-building bacteria within, but once the pill passes your stomach, having a drink or two is just fine. I get that the nurse wants me to be safe, but personally, I just assumed that the manufacturer's instructions -- take pill on an empty stomach with a lukewarm glass of water -- implied that I shouldn't be wasted while doing so. Maybe others drew different conclusions. So consider this my public service announcement du jour: drinking, OK.
I'm reminded of something from my own undergraduate experience, in which a fellow student was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Everyone in the class had been "exposed" and needed to be tested. While waiting in line for the tuberculin all I could think was "if I test positive, I'm going to be on antibiotics and won't be able to drink for, like, months." In retrospect, the more pressing thought should have been "if I test positive... holy shit I have tuberculosis!"
As months go, May usually works out pretty well for me. This one seems to be going pretty well... the sun is shining, the undergrads will all be leaving town in a few days and I just had my first peach of the season, and it was fantastic. Good ol' summer.
I just bought tickets back to DC for the Porterman's wedding. If you care, I should be around the District from July 4 to 9. And it better be a phenomenal time, because airfare was effing expensive.
It's been a while since really watched, but Conan O'Brian is filming in San Francisco all this week. Joe and Johno are still regular visitors to the ConeZone, and were able to procure a few tickets for tonight's show.
So let's look quickly at the schedule... yesterday was a dynamite lineup of George Lucas and Will Arnett. Tonight we have... wait for it... Robin Williams, and the world frisbee golf champion.
Not to disparage frisbee golf, but man. They did not draw well. Especially considering the friday show, with guests Snoop Dogg and Tom Waits. Oh god I hope they do a duet.
This trip to the Philippines next month is actually coming together. Despite some hearty mocking from Marie and her family, paranoia finally got the better of me, so I scheduled a trip to the campus travel clinic. With their help, I've metamorphasized into a tropical Superman. I now have the power to fend off tetanus, hepatitis A, B and C, typhoid, malaria, MMR, and a broad range of gastrointestinal-distress-causing bacteria. I declined the shot for Japanese encphalitis, so that'll be a chink in the armor. But nevertheless, I'm feeling pretty solid.
I figure I should get the most out of these immunizations while they last, so if anyone wants to go hiking through Amazonia in the next five years, please let me know.
