Drown My Sorrows In A New Computer
Hey team. I again feel lousy about the extended silences, but I've fallen deep into a computer-related malaise. My laptop is slowly dying, my computer at work has the processing power of an abacus, and my wireless router has apparently given up on life - despite Tommy putting it in the freezer for a half-hour, (I'm still not clear on that one). But in contrast to my declining computing ability, work has required a dramatic increase in time spent at a computer, crunching numbers and working on figures for a paper, etc. etc.
The unfortunate result is that my clicking finger has been bothering me, so I've been trying to reduce my recreational internet time. Both the reading and writing of blogs have suffered dearly.
I know, I know - it's horrifying. But I think it's only temporary. Experiments are a drain, but we're not far off from the thesis-writing stage of my graduate career, which means unfettered time spent at a computer, not doing things I should be doing. I expect this to mean a sharp uptick in my attention to this here website.
In light of this upcoming paradigm shift, I'm coming dangerously close to buying myself a new laptop. So if you have any advice about what to do and not do, I'd love to hear it. Recent cosmic alignments seem keen on convincing me into buying a Mac, but I'm still a frightened of change...

Yeah ... so, one would think when you are in thesis writing mode you would spend more time at a computer ... but, it has caused me some physical maladies ... as in back pain. Therefore, I can only spend so many hours in front of it.
As for laptops, Dells are nice, but they fall apart in old age. Mine still runs, but barely: the monitor, touch pad, and keyboard are useless, the disk drive and CD/DVD drive are falling out, my battery last 5 minutes, and the whole thing makes a strange rattling noise. It is essentially a mobile desktop computer, as I have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse both in the lab and at home. I can't wait till work gives me one ... Kendra has an IBM Thinkpad that seems to have stood the test of time.

Get a macbook. You'll like it.
But, if you insist on being a coward, A.J.'s right: thinkpads are the way to go. But they're not made by IBM anymore, but rather by Lenovo, which bought the brand from IBM after handling manufacturing for them for several years.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad that I'm pretty happy with, they are reliable and sturdy, the warranty is good. They are a bit pricey but uh... you should really be getting a macbook anyway, unless the rumors are true that you are a terd handler.
