Back Back to Cali Cali

Marie and I are back in Berkeley, safe and sound, for all who care.

I was wondering on the airplane this morning... 2006 saw a great deal of hubbub about gender equity in the physical sciences, but what about aviation? I don't think I've ever been on or witnessed a commercial flight that had a woman in the flight deck. What's the deal here? Does anyone care?

I had a female pilot once. But that is like over 100's of flights, so I guess that is not too significant. What is also stifling is I think I have only met one straight male flight attendant.

I'm guessing it has a lot to do with what's required to fly passenger jets. My understanding is that the only economical way to log that many flight hours is to come from a military background. So the real question might be why there are so few female pilots in the military (or were, when the current generation of jet pilots was coming up). That's probably easier to answer.
