Mine Eyes

I've been wearing the same glasses for about five years now, and I'm thinking it's time for a change. While, unlike Tommy, I'm not especially keen on the idea of lasers burning holes into my skull, I would like to jump on this oppourtunity to pick up a new gadget or two.

So... what does the world think about Transitions lenses? I'm highly intrigued by the idea of not having to carry around a second pair of prescription sunglasses, but I'm worried that they might get annoying in practice. Do they transition fast enough? Do the lenses ever tint in unwanted situations?

I'm very particular about things that go on my face, so I don't want to blow a few C-notes on something that doesn't actually work very well. Advise me, internet!

Well, Yglesias has a pair and seems to like em. They don't get *that* dark, but it's noticeable in bright light. I don't know why you'd spend money on them, though -- can't you just synthesize the relevant chemical, then get the glass shop to grind you a pair of lenses?

Also on that note: your intense and directionless hatred of lasers is really a betrayal of your alleged love of science.

Clay has them. Every once in a while I notice his glasses are dark indoors after he has come from outdoors. I am not sure they are particularly fast ... but I could be wrong ...

Don't get me wrong, tommy - I love lasers as much as the next physical biochemist. It's just that I've seen and interacted with the kinds of people who are in charge of the actual lasing, and I'm not sure I want them taking aim at my eyeballs.

Get the LASIK surgery. I had it done 1.5 years ago and haven't looked back. Find a place in your area that does free examinations, get one, then tell them you can't make an appointment then because you don't know your schedule. Then find a cheap place and do it there.

And it's not your skull, it's your cornea. Wuss.
